Thank you, Tina! Those blooms are not irises but Fringed Gentian, a tallgrass prairie flower that blooms in late September. They are much smaller than irises.

Those flowers are rare natives of the tallgrass prairie, along with bottle gentian, which also grows on the property where I took this picture. It is a nature preserve owned by my former employer, a land conservation organization.
They are fascinating.
